Global Warming isn’t the only reason to start reducing our consumption of gasoline.

In May of 2008, gasoline prices had climbed to unprecedented highs and oil prices were rocketing past anything that’s ever been seen in the past, the United States Congress finally called oil execs on the carpet to explain why.

One by one, executives from each of the five largest oil companies (Exxon Mobil, Conoco Phillips, Shell Oil, Chevron and BP) wrung their hands, shook their heads, and explained that the law of “supply and demand” was responsible for the high prices at the gas pumps.

The cry of “the market sets the price” may have seemed like an easy out for these oil execs. But it takes only a tiny bit of research to see that supply and demand have little to do with the reason we’re paying higher and higher prices for every fill-up.

In earlier years, when U.S consumers were shocked by prices at the pumps, that shock was always caused by a disruption in supply. (In 1973, for example, an Arab oil embargo caused gas shortages that resulted in high prices and long lines at the pumps.)

The late 70’s saw another spike in gas prices with yet another shortage, and once again the law of supply and demand prevailed.

The next price hike in the U.S. (which was caused by a real shortage) came in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast oil refineries and devastated production.

It was from that point forward that a new trend in pricing began to emerge: one that had little to do with real world supplies and real U.S. demand.

It had more to do with Wall Street commodities traders who were pumping money into futures contracts, a move that pushed prices ever higher.

By late in 2005, oil had reached a then-staggering $70 a barrel. This caused conservative publication The National Review to warn the investors that the manipulated “oil bubble” was surely about to crash and create a downturn in the economy (which would make the dot com bust of the 90’s “look like a picnic.”)

Of course, as we all know now, prices did not crash. Much to our surprise and consternation, they did, in fact, continue to rise and rise and rise.

Oil prices have now passed $130 a barrel. And this is despite the fact that there has been no disruption in supplies, no rising surge in demand.

In fact, the oil industry’s own statistics indicate that world oil production is up while demand in the U.S. is on the downturn. And U.S. gasoline reserves are at their highest levels in 15 years.

That’s because the American motorist, faced with sky-high prices at the pumps, has actively embraced conservation.

But the resulting downturn in U.S demand hasn’t delivered any relief at the pumps, or any lowering of prices. In fact, gas prices are getting higher every day.

So, supply and demand is not driving those prices we pay at the pump.

What is?

Just as The National Review warned in 2005, oil and gas prices are being manipulated by investors who’ve pulled their money out of the busted real estate market and poured it into other commodities: like corn, gold and oil.

As the prices for those commodities climb, the investors who bought low are selling high. And it’s the American consumer who’s paying the price.

So where does that leave you?

First of all, keep your whole windscreen clean. When you wash your car; don’t forget to lift the wiperblades off the windscreen and wash and rinse the area below them, even though that isn’t the area you look through.
It’s important to keep the whole windscreen clean, because, when the screen is wet, the dirt particles become very mobile, and can get under the edge of the blade. This has several effects:-

Firstly, the particles between the screen and the blade cause uneven contact|friction between screen and blade. This causes the blade to vibrate, creating noise. This problem is made worse if you have rubber Windscreen Wipers, because they loose their flexibility with age and exposure to Ultra Violet Light, Ozone, many Screen Wash ingredients, and pollution. As the blade becomes stiffer it’s much more likely to jump and judder as it moves from clean to dirty glass.

Secondly, the dirt & grit particles abrade and cut the surface of the wiper blade right at the critical working edge. On rubber Car Wiper Blades this also increases the area for UV, Pollution, Ozone and solvents to attack the rubber, so speeding up the hardening process, which in turn makes the noise worse.

Thirdly, the dirt and grit particles settle on the non-working surfaces of the wiper blade. These particles harbour road grease & pollutants, which attack the rubber from the sides, causing more hardening and in turn more susceptibility to juddering and noise.
When the blade looses its flexibility and then is subjected to juddering, it tears at the mounting. As a result the rubber wears or tears at the critical mounting points, and the mounting points themselves become deformed and loose. This in turn leads to more judder, and so the cycle speeds accelerates.

Flatblade Wiper Blades are much more resistant to this last problem, because they have a much more substantial anchor point between the blade and the Parts which hold it in place.

As usual, prevention is far better, easier and cheaper than a cure. A stitch in time really can save 9.

Careful cleaning of your Car Wiper Blades will markedly reduce the tendency to judder and make noise, and if you’re not lucky enough to have Silicone Windscreen Wipers, it will also markedly slow down the predictable aging process of the rubber.

So, to recapitulate

Classic Automobile Parts; Where Do You Find Them?

For the internet quote we entered our vehicle information, the amount of coverage we wanted and our personal information. A screen came up that stated we would have our vehicle insurance quote within the hour. We had entered this in at ten o’clock on a Saturday morning. We assumed that it would take longer to get the quote because of the weekend. This first form we filled out was for a major vehicle insurance company. The weekend ended and we received no information.

On that Monday I called our insurance agent and told him that we were looking to reduce the cost of our vehicle insurance and we wanted a price quote from him. He took the information regarding the amount of coverage we presently have and also the information on each of our vehicles. The next day the agent returned the call and said that they could get us the same coverage for half the price that we were presently paying. He told us that we would need to fill out some paper work that he would have his secretary send out to us. Once we returned the paper work he would process the new vehicle insurance. Also on that day we received the completed quotes from the company on the internet. Their amount was cheaper than what we were currently paying, however it was not as low as what our agent was able to quote us.

We waited several days and did not receive the paper work that the agent promised to send. We have a problem with our mail from time to time so I called the agent to see if he had sent the information. He stated that he had not because he was waiting for our driving history to return so he could give us the most accurate quote. The one he had given us was based on straight coverage and did not take into account any driving violations. When he called us back he told us that he could not beat the price we are presently paying because there were two speeding tickets on our records, one from a year ago and one from thirty four months ago. I could not believe that two speeding tickets double the amount you have to pay for vehicle insurance.

Well, first we need to look at all the different Windscreen Wiper types, and to understand the features and benefits of each of them.

There are two basic shapes of Windscreen Wiper Assembly:-

Classic Car Wiper Blades have a clearly visible metal frame with a number of legs reaching down to hold the blade onto the windscreen. The wiper arm is held onto the windscreen by the spring at it’s base, and this pressure is transmitted to the blade via the “legs”. The drawbacks of this type of Windscreen Wiper are firstly that there are many joints which can seize, break or just wear. If the joints seize, the blade can’t bend to the contours of the windscreen, and so it leaves un-wiped areas. If the joints wear; they cause the blade to chatter or squeak because it isn’t held securely and at the right angle to the windscreen.
Secondly, uneven pressure is applied along the length of the blade. Pressure is only applied via the legs. In general terms, the cheaper the wiper, the less legs it will have, so a Wiper Blade with 8 legs will have 8 spots of high pressure along the length of the blade. This leads to uneven wear, which in turn leads to streaking & unswept areas of windscreen.
Thirdly, the anchor points for the blade into the assembly are quite narrow, and so do not have good control over the blade and its angle to the windscreen.
Fourthly, classic Car Wiper Blades are not at all aerodynamic. They generate noise and drag, and lift at high speeds unless they are equipped with aerofoils

Flat wiper blades have no joints or moving parts, and spread the pressure much more evenly along the length of the blade. The anchor point for the blade is very thick and stable, so the blade is always held at the correct angle to the windscreen which virtually eliminates the chances of squeaking. Flat wiper blades generate much less aerodynamic drag, noise and lift than classic blades which further adds to efficient quiet operation over a longer life.

Next we need to think about the material used to make the blade itself

Natural & Synthetic Rubber Blends are OK in temperate climates, but Rubber blades only have a design life of 200,000 to 500,000 cycles, and this is drastically reduced because rubber is attacked by U.V. light and Ozone. Also, as temperatures drop; rubber stiffens and becomes rigid, so it can’t bend to your windscreen’s form just when you most need a clean efficient wipe. When the rubber is rigid, it’s also extremely vulnerable to cracking & tearing.

Some brands add Graphite to the Rubber Compound of the blade. This ensures a smoother quieter wipe, and improves life by up to 10%, but it does nothing to address the problems of UV & Ozone attack, or the basic problem of rigidity in cold weather.

PTFE or Silicone resins are used as a coating over Rubber on many Car Wiper Blades. These resins are very flexible, resistant to extremes in temperature, UV and Ozone, and offer greatly improved wear characteristics, but unfortunately, the rubber core of these blades still goes rigid in cold weather.

Finally, there are 100% Silicone Windscreen Wipers. These use a blade made from 100% Silicone Resin. This stays flexible down to -60°C, is impervious to UV, Ozone, Fuels and most Solvents, and offers a design life of up to 1,500,000 cycles.

So, which Car Wiper Blades are right for you and your car?

For the average City & Suburban Motorist, Classic style Car Wiper Blades are fine, because the speeds aren’t too high for the aerodynamics to be important. But you should think carefully about Silicone Windscreen Wiper Blades, because, whilst they cost about the same as Premium Branded Car Wiper Blades; they give up to 7.5 times the life of cheap blades, and 3 times the life of premium branded Car Wiper Blades.

Low Mileage and Classic Car Drivers can also benefit greatly from switching to Silicone Windscreen Wipers, because unlike rubber, the Silicone Windscreen Wipers aren’t being degraded by the ozone & UV as they sit in the garage or car park.
