Sixty Percent of Vehicle Owners Planning to Purchase Cars Despite Recession
Roughly sixty per cent of drivers plan to buy a new or used vehicle this year in spite of the depression, a survey has shown. But increasing running costs are acting to discourage people from buying 4x4s or People Carriers, the survey by motoring website and magazine Auto Trader found.
Based on responses from 1,270 British drivers asked last month, the research showed that 54% of drivers plan to purchase a used (including almost new) vehicle and 6% plan to buy a new car. twenty-nine per cent of potential purchasers are keen to save money on increasing fuel, road tax and insurance costs with the choice of their next vehicle.
Auto Trader group marketing director Matt Thompson said: "Our research provides evidence that there are plenty of motorists looking to buy a new or used car. This is great news for private sellers, dealers and manufacturers.”
Throughout the last year the Sales Figures demonstrate a constant growth in demand for fuel and tax- efficient superminis and other little cars and a reduction in demand for 4x4s, MPVs|People Carriers and other hefty family cars.
In the aftermarket also there are patterns of a back to basics approach amongst drivers with sales of high value electronic goods plummeting, whilst more crucial necessities and protection items like light bulbs, Wiper Blades, filters etc are all holding up well.
The UK’s biggest Automotive After-market retailer, Halfords, with over 440 shops, has stated, that it’s overall sales are down, and the major contributors to this decline are the reduction in both unit value and Unit Sales of Satellite Navigation Systems and Premium In-Car Entertainment Systems. Alternatively “Common Sense Necessity items are holding up well, and overall the company expect to meet its profit estimates for the full financial year.
Another player in the After-Market also suggests an advantageous effect from the depression. Silicone Wiper Blade Importer XOPC recieved sales up over 100% compared to the same period last year. They put this down to the fact that drivers are more prepared to consider the market before just blindly buying one of the established leading brands. They claim that their offer of high performance and exceptionally long life is proving very attractive to drivers keen to get value for money whilst maintaining or improving their car’s Safety. XOPC say their Wiper Blades are charged very competitively against premium branded rubber Wiper Blades, and furthermore they are covered by a twelve month replacement warranty. The company went on to claim that Silicone Wiper Blades normally last 3 – five times longer than rubber Wiper Blades, and are particularly efficient in extreme conditions.
