Vacuuming Tips

You've likely heard that it's good to vacuum on a regular basis.  Here you will learn the answers to these common questions: "How often should I vacuum?", "Is there a proper technique?", and "Why is it so important?"

Why is vacuuming important?

The obvious reason of why it is important to vacuum is because it removes dirt, dust and debris from your carpeting.  This is important because the longer that abrasive particles remain in your carpet (or upholstery!), the more they will cut the fibers, causing premature wear and fiber damage.

The less obvious, but equally important reason is that you will have cleaner air in your home!  There are some schools of belief that say that incorporating more hard flooring into a home will be healthier, yet a little known fact is that homes with more carpeting often have much cleaner air to breathe!  This is because carpeting works as a very large horizontal air filter.  As air moves through your home, carrying dust and dander, carpeting pulls it out of the air!  With hard floors, it just accumulates and is redistributed into the air as you move around.

As long as this large 'air filter' is emptied regularly (by vacuuming), your air quality will be improved dramatically.

How often should you vacuum?

This depends on how much traffic and dust is in the home (obviously it will be needed more frequently if you have several kids, pets and a remodel project).  Generally it's best to vacuum once or twice per week.  Also, don't forget to vacuum your upholstery!  Often overlooked, furniture will also remove dust and debris from the air, as well as from contact with clothes, skin, etc.  Vacuuming your upholstery once a month will also help improve indoor air quality, as well as extend the life of your home furnishings.

Is there a proper technique to vacuuming?

Yes!  When vacuuming carpeting, the most important movement is when you are pulling the vacuum back towards you.  It doesn't matter how fast you push it forward, but it will pick up significantly more dirt and dust if you pull it more slowly back to you.  This is because the vacuum's brushes are designed to lift and separate the fibers as it is pulled toward you (you will feel more resistance) allowing the suction to penetrate more deeply into the carpet pile and remove more debris.  Also, make sure the height of the brushes is adjusted correctly.  If there is little or no resistance as it is pulled towards you, lower the height of the brushes [most vacuums give you a selector switch, with a hard floor setting on one side, and a deep pile setting on the other].  Likewise, if there is too much resistance, raise the brush height a little.

While vacuuming alone is not all that is needed to keep your carpet and upholstery clean, following proper vacuuming technique on a regular basis will result in carpet that lasts longer, and air that is cleaner to breathe.  And an insider's tip to keeping them even cleaner: make it a habit to leave shoes by the front door.  This will make sure that pollutants that adhere to shoes during the normal course of a day never make it into your carpeting.
